Billionaire Paul Allen finds USS Lexington, lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea

This was from the other day, and the video of the find is pretty impressive:

Billionaire-turned-explorer Paul Allen has discovered the missing wreck of the World War II carrier USS Lexington (CV-2) at the bottom of the Coral Sea.

The crew of his personal research ship R/V Petrel found the missing ship two miles below the surface and about 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia, he announced on Monday.

“To pay tribute to the USS Lexington and the brave men that served on her is an honor,” Allen said in a statement.

“As Americans, all of us owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who served and who continue to serve our country for their courage, persistence and sacrifice.”

Here’s the video from the Petrel:

It’s amazing to me how well preserved everything looks.  Apparently the lack of sunlight and oxygen in the water at that depth have done a great deal to protect the “Lady Lex” from the ravages of time.

Yesterday I watched a bunch of documentaries on the battle and the Lex (Army guy, so I know little of it), and the best I found are the historical ones:

Does anyone know if Allen has plans to do further exploration for other WWII vessels? I would espiceially be interested if he intends to search for the U.S.S. Wasp, sunk just a few months later (15 Sept 1942) just north of this location.

I was a Second Class IC Electricians Mate aboard the USS PORTLAND during the Coral Sea battle, and also the battle of Midway.
