California Town Councilman and high school teacher Gregory Salcido on service members: “dumb $#!*’s, not high level thinkers”

Well, I saw this little gem on Saturday morning, and could barely wait to come in this morning and introduce the readers to Gregory Salcido.  Mr. Salcido is a history teacher at  El Rancho High and a city councilman in Pico Rivera, in sunny southern California.  Let me start with a warm language warning here, and a mighty trigger warning, because not only does he like to use profanity in teaching his classes, he has some rather…..well, unorthodox beliefs about the men and women currently fighting overseas.

He comes right out of the gate on this video with the quote to end all quotes:

We have a bunch of dumb shits over there.  [Our service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.]  Think about the people that you know over there, your fricken stupid uncle Louie, or whatever, they’re dumb shits.  They’re not like high level thinkers, they’re not academic people, they’re not intellectual people.  They’re the fricken lowest of our low.”

So yeah, before I even address that little bit of ugliness, let me start with the news report, and then the actual video, which honestly has to be seen (or in this case listened to) to be believed.  From the San Gabriel Valley Times:

Three videos on social media of Pico Rivera Councilman Gregory Salcido, a teacher at El Rancho High School, making disparaging remarks about the military and berating a student for wearing a sweatshirt with a Marines logo have gone viral and created a backlash.

El Rancho Unified School District officials confirmed Saturday, Jan. 27 that the person speaking is Salcido and that the incident took place on school grounds.

“We acknowledge it is his voice based on the research of the incident so far and knowing it came from one of our classrooms,” district Superintendent Karling Aguilera-Fort said in a phone interview.

“We have reached out to Mr. Salcido but have not been able to talk to him because he is out of town,” Aguilera-Fort said.

A subsequent Facebook post by Mr. Salcido came in from New York, where he was evidently attending a musical with his family, wherein he defended himself on the grounds that “I don’t think it’s wise for me to make any specific comments, but I want my friends, family, and students to know we are fine and we respect the rights of free expression for all individuals.”

Ah, yes, the First Amendment Defense.  Unfortunately, you’re not really doing it right.

Here’s the video (again, slight language warning):

OK, let’s start with the uneducated bunch of incompetent boobs line of reasoning championed by Mr. Salcido in his supposed rant furthering the cause of the first amendment.  According to “Face The Facts”, a project of George Washington University:

As a whole, the U.S. military is far better educated than the American population it defends. 82.8 percent of U.S. military officers in 2010 had at least a bachelor’s degree, compared to 29.9 percent of the general population. 93.6 percent of enlisted soldiers had at least a high school diploma, compared to 59.5 percent of America.

OK, so maybe they have a higher education level, but they don’t succeed outside the military, right?

Yeah, not so much, as this Business Insider article profiled 15 Top 500 CEOs who got their start in the military:

Few institutions teach discipline, management, logistics, and efficiency like the US Armed Forces, so it's no surprise that Ranker's list of Fortune 500 CEOs finds many military veterans.

These are the Chief Executive Officers of companies you might have heard of, like Johnson and Johnson, Proctor and Gamble, Casey’s General Store, Walgreens, Viacom, General Motors, Verizon, Foot Locker and Fed Ex.

So, he’s wrong on education level and wrong on success in the outside world.  Empirically wrong.  But most of us knew that anecdotally.   When my unit deployed to Afghanistan, I was in my second year of law school and I volunteered to go.  Not because I had no options, I wanted to serve.  My best friend was also enlisted as an E5 Sergeant, despite his having a Master’s Degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown and working full time at the highest levels of the Pentagon.  A guy I served as an infantryman with in Bosnia was an Air Traffic Controller in civilian life.  I knew other enlisted guys who were lawyers, nurses, school administrators and business leaders.  One of my fellow squad leaders was pursuing a masters in History at Carnegie Mellon.  Maybe my unit was out of the ordinary, but not according to the numbers that GWU has shown above.  Perhaps Mr. Salcido is looking at a different study, but I’d love to see it.

Meanwhile, before he shut his Facebook down to outside comments, it had already amassed 508 comments, ranging from very angry, to defending the teacher, to snark at the situation he finds himself in now.

One comment was noted in the San Gabriel Valley Times that should probably have made me mad (and evidently did make others mad) but just made me giggle:

“This teacher is saying something every parent needs to hear!” wrote someone named Omar Grubbs. “Because no parent should want their kid joining the military. There is so much more in life than signing up to slave away for a country that taxes the poor and not the rich.”

That comment right there has so much wrong with it I’m not even sure where to start.  I have a 2.5 year old daughter, and I dream of her being accepted into the Air Force Academy someday.  To do that, she’ll have to excel all along the way, but that is my dream for her.   I have 5 month old twin boys, and I dream someday that they’ll follow Dad into the Army.  Maybe as infantrymen.  One looks like a ranger already, and the other looks like he could be a sniper.  A bit hard to tell at that age.  But if they come to me and say they’d rather go into music, theater, or (God forbid) politics or the Peace Corps, I would be no less or more proud of them.  The military was a great way of life for me.  I wasn’t a “slave” to a country of people run by some oligarchy; I wasn’t drafted; I went willingly.  As did every single other person I served with.

They say that the Infantry is the lowest of what Mr. Salcido claims is a subset which is already the “lowest of the low.”  Which I guess makes us Grunts the “lowest of the lowest of the low.”  Ok tough guy.  Here’s a list of the Skill Level 1 tasks for an infantryman, which include: first aid, communications, orient a map to the ground by map-terrain association, detect chemical agents, use of night vision devices, search a detainee……it goes on for 9 pages of tasks.

I have nothing against all other occupations, but a history teacher is supposed to remember things from history, and then pass them along.  Our *list* of tasks, to be level 1 is 9 pages long.  If it is so easy, then I would challenge Mr. Salcido to read those tasks, and then see how he can do against a random serviceman or woman on the Expert Infantry Badge Qualification.  We’ll see who the “dumb $#!^’s” are then.

As for his First Amendment defense, I’m not going to even bother going into detail on that one.  He didn’t figure out that teachers can’t just say or do whatever they want the first two times apparently:

In May 2012, he was put on paid administrative leave after the Sheriff’s Department received a complaint that he struck a student.

In July 2010, a parent complained that Salcido had threatened his daughter, made inappropriate comments to his summer school class about race and insulted other students and parents, which Salcido denied.

He was suspended until the following fall’s first day of class.

The over-use of the free speech defense is startling to me.  Apparently some people think it is some sort of panacea or magic wand with which one can extricate oneself from problems by just crying it out loud: “rights of free expression for all individuals” and voila! all the problems are gone.

The First Amendment has limitations, defamation and libel being two obvious ones, but swearing in a classroom with minors, insulting large groups of people in the US and citing “facts” that are most charitably debatable doesn’t automatically get overridden because you say it is protected.  Using that logic, there are any number of things that people would tell their boss on any given day, and then inform the employer that they couldn’t be fired because of the First Amendment.

If you are dumb enough to believe that, you get everything you deserve.  As far as being a councilman (and even former mayor), well, that’s up to the fine people of Pico Rivera, California to decide.  That’s the beauty of living in a representative democracy, vice a slave state envisioned by the Omar Grubbs’ of the world.

This clown has no idea about life and how he needs to become educated enough to even talk to any student. He is total proof of being an educated fool, but a common sense lacking idiot! Speaking like that to students and not being fired, shows me that school has no pride in their staff or how their students rank with others. Sad state of affairs for that school district and it's students!

Sadly this pers on lacks the interaction of our military.

Aj Nichols process engineer. USMC VMGR 252.

It is asshame when comments are made with no understanding of the cost of freedom. This person will make his or her comments because they have not had to ensure this pain and suffering. It is time all American think about what life would be if they were under the rule of another country!

Mr. Salicido should heed this advice. " Tis better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt"

what was his gpa in college to become a teacher? I wood like to challenge his in a cub scout obstacle course run.what a piss ant he are!

Has this idiot raised enough "red flags" yet to be be monitored before he trips off the line and does something stupid? I would not trust him around my school age children.

Why try an defend subscribers of this persons comments we know the truth, or at least should. His comments are not free speech but an assault. I do not qualify him as spewing protected speech. He is an educator and I question how his comments support his curriculum for that class. He should be fired from his position of inspiring our future generations. ...Oh and I cleaned up my comments AAALOT!!

Let me at that pinche Salcido. I will kick his free speech ass for free!

I am a retired Air Force Master Sergeant who served around the world, including Vietnam. I have an associate degree, bachelors degree, masters degree and two doctorate degrees. I am sure my education and intelligence level far exceeds this "teacher". I graduated with highest honors at each level. This ignorant person doesn't have any idea what he is talking about. Shame on him.

Mr Salcido should be fired from the school district quickly. What a terrible example of a teacher.
He has no knowledge of the U.S. Military. Let's send him to Afghanistan to see what kind of
man he really is. I served three years in the U.S. Navy, and then became a Music Teacher in the
Public Schools for 30 years.

This is the problem with our education system and is a prime, yet unfortunately not so rare, example of what happens when you teach alternative, anti-American history to generations of kids.
We need to invest more in the Americanism programs of the American Legion and insist on a wholesale re-examination of our public school curriculum. We can leave the disparaging rhetoric to teachers in places like Iran, North Korea and Mexico but no tax dollars should be spent to further anti-American propaganda within our borders.
The only reason we even know about this incident is because one alert kid had the presence of mind to recognize it as inappropriate and record it.

Yeah but the high school kids think he is so cool. This guy is a traitor. I did not serve, my father did not serve but both my grandfather and grandmother served. I am extremely proud to be an American as are my children. This guy is just a rehashed hippie with a deeper and darker message. As a country we need to wakeup and realize that this is the type of message that what will be our downfall. This is nothing new and it is a very powerful movement. A movement to reach the young people and break their faith in any authority structure. I pray that younger people take the time to read history, philosophy, read anything. Literacy is the key to liberation. Until they are exposed to a different viewpoint and understand the real world they will remain mislead and ignorant. I wonder if he realizes that in a revolution intellectuals are among the first to be eliminated.

I have read plenty on this situation but have seen nothing about the students stating their opinion
to the teacher about their feelings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a retired disabled captain of the Adjutant General Corps, late of the Infantry and a former Information Specialist in the Army and a former Radioman 3/class with a TS in the USCG. I also hold the German Army's Expert Infantry Badge in Btonze and was considered as an instructor in it. Academically I have an AA and a BA, the latter in Journalism and History, Honor Societies for both as well as being honored by Canada as Israel as a parachutist and, a graduate of CAS3 plus being inducted into Who's Who. Let's see how Salcido measures up to THAT!

I am an Army Veteran, a retired teacher after 31 years, and have a Bachelors Degree and two Masters. In no school I ever worked at, would this "teacher" be able to continue as a teacher. This man is a detriment to his students and to the entire educational process. Personal opinions, no matter the direction they take, are not to be used to indoctrinate the young.

This is the education kids are getting today? He needs to loose his job, are his wife and kids proud of him? I'm an Army combat infantry Vet and am well educated. Not drafted either. And would do it again if called upon and would gladly take Mr. a$$#@Le Salcido with me to clear all mines and IED's that might be in the way. I like the idea of lining his way from his car to his class with Vets.

It's too bad we have people like this living in America. Reminds me of the ones who stayed home in the late 60's, insulted and spit on those of us who heard the calling and went. They've always been there and always will, much is the pity, spouting about their rights that others have guaranteed them. Even in '65-'69, the combat infantryman had to know and practice many skills that these stay at home pansies could not even begin to do. Where's the draft when you need it? Probably don't want someone like Salcido in your foxhole with you!

After reading this blog sent to me from the American Legion and listening to the student that took the video in class this morning on one of the better news channels, I could not be more proud of this young man for standing up to what is becoming the norm for the world of academia to bash all forms of life as the deplorable under educated class of human begins that make the world work. I severed my country as an enlisted airman in the United States Air Force after successfully going to college and a short career in the Sheriffs department. I don't view my service as a mistake but an opportunity to have served this country for a short six years of my life that I would not want to have changed at any cost.

This will not make CNN or any other main media. Guess way! To think this guy can be permitted to teacher in public schools. Would love to see a full picture of his back ground. I hope Hillary is proud of him.

You just can't fix stupid.

I served 8 years in the military. 2 yrs US Army and 6 years USAFNG. It is a shame that a school system would allow a weasel like this to speak to students without presenting an opposing view and the real facts. I am disturbed that this happens in our country.

as a retired teacher and a 9 year marine vet, i am flabbergasted that
this individual is still employed. As several people have already mentioned, my job was to open my students' minds, not close them. I am sure rhis

Is it any wonder that some of the High Schools in CA have teachers putting out these lies and disrespecting those who serve or have served in the US military? When you consider most of the politicians from that state are blinded by their liberal, progressive agenda and anti military, then it isn't too surprising that some of the teachers are biased against the conservative values held by most of the military. God help us if we have to rely on folks like Salcido to defend this country.

Allowing people to voice their opinions is one of the rights I (we) have all served to defend. I am not happy about the actual content and especially concerned in the forum in which it was presented. I will leave it to the School Board to deal with the forum and language. As to what he believes and states - well I retired years ago and have found that there a lot of people who have a lot of opinions that I don't. I just hold with the simple truth - I can't force them to be smart - the law allows them to be as dumb as a box of rocks. I am sure that his career will reflect his beliefs and the beliefs of those that currently employ him...

I have one word to describe this idiot. Loser! Correction two words. Jobless Loser! Any idiot with a GED or above can go to college yet only 27% can get in the military. Many are too ignorant for today's military yet they go to college, been there, seen it first hand. Apparently this moron is intimidated by real heroes who serve with honor and feels butt hurt over being such a cowardly male that he lashes out against those who are honored.

This is a prime example of “fake news” . This story is neither news worthy nor informative. Just mindless dreck .

Talk about not being educated or successful! Did he ever think of how the 'freedom of speech' has been preserved by those who put themselves in harms way so assholes like him could demean them? Probably not because being a legend in his own mind he wouldn't stoop so low.

Well I was reading all the comments, and called my wife she is a teacher here in ca. I asked her if she heard about this guy and she said yes they were talking about him in her school. They appear rely did fire him. All I can say is this tho. First off why do we have too call him a liberal? I know many liberals and none of them speak like that. I think this guy should be fired from his councilman position right away. And also I am doing my best too not stoop too his level and call him what I really think he is. Do-process will get him. If it doesn’t KARMA WILL. I served twice in the army first from 1976-1984. When 911 happened I went back in and deployed. I then finished serving and retired from the NG. I’m proud of this country and what I did. This man should not be in a class room or any type of political position. He will now look for potty and understand from those like him and he will cry the blues and talk of how he was miss treated. Well dude you will get what you deserve I like most of the post I read and agree with all. So with one finale comment from me to you me too you Mr don’t know your ass from a home in the ground good luck. Cause your gonna need it. Also why don’t you leave our country that you think is so bad and go check out somewhere else too live so you can say things about America from that messed up country.

Why are the students laughing? What's funny about insulting military people who would die for us? Parents should get their heads out of their own asses and pull students out of this class.

Looks like they kept the afterbirth and threw away something else.

I had to listen to the recording sever times as I could not believe what I was listening to. I may not have a college degree, but I earned my Dd-214. Twenty two years I have my country without hesitation. This so called teacher knows nothing about sacrifices. He needs a real education what the military services are about. I invite him to go through Marine Corps Boot Camp, let him understand why the recruits are told to everything. He is a disgrace as a Teacher and Politician. He should study the facts before polluting the minds of our future. Respect is earned not given. You have none !

I served and fly my American flag every day. Drop this idiot off in Afganistan and see how how he lasts.

A clear example of those who can do and those who can’t teach. That is not intended at all teachers. He is a person of authority spewing his agenda to impressionable youth. The only service he has done is prepare those going to college for the liberal indoctrination on many college campuses.

This man should get fired. Not only did he bash on the military in a vile manner he cursed like crazy in front of children. I am really confused why people are pulling out political sides on this thread to explain his behavior. We need to start to see past politics and looking at things for what they really are. I don't think any political group would be happy he spoke those words. He was just plain wrong for what he said and he is completely uninformed on people in the military. It is sad he is in a position to share is insane ideas with children. I hope that entire community including the school will stand up to him.

I can only say that this guy is not well educated at all or he wouldn’t have made such ill informed outbursts about our military members since quite many of them have more education than he has as a teacher. I’ve met many in the military with Masters, PhD’s or even Doctoral degrees and some have more than one. My greatest concern is the vulgarity he uses when communicating with his students; I would not want my children to be educated by someone who’s apparently lacking better mastery of the English language. Using language at this form with our children is a disgrace to teachers everywhere, as he should be setting the standard in language for them.

I have relatives who served in the military and they're retired

I'm a retired teacher with 32 years of service and retired Naval Reservist with 28 years of service including active duty during Vietnam and Desert Shield/Storm. Mr Salcido represents the worst side of American society. Telling hateful lies from a position of institutional authority and respect to impressionable youth is a disservice to the educational institution and the American public that relies on balanced, truthful education from it. His behavior is disgusting to me and, I suspect, the overwhelming majority of dedicated educators worldwide. He does not belong in any classroom anywhere.

This guy is probably bitter towards the military because likely tried to join but didn't measure up and was turned down. As for his profanity in the class room he would be fired if he was in any other state than California. Just look at who they elect for senators and congressmen.

This guy is a nut! I'm a vet, USArmy (Ret), 1963-1983., ex - Drill Sgt. Give him to me for about 20 min and i'll re-educate him on his attitude! Nuts like this shouldn't be allowed with children. Hitler proved that!

It's no wonder our children are being DUMBed down by teachers like this. For a start the school is in CA and what can you expect. This teacher needs to be fired. This is not freedom of speech. He is a disgrace to the fine teachers that are still out there.

Its been a long time since I've been in HS but I never had a teacher swear in class like this bum. He should be canned for his foul language alone. He isn't much of a teacher if he can't express himself any better than that. It appears that he's the one who isn't educated.

I was a high school teacher for 28 years in Los Angeles (10 yrs retired) Teachers like Salcido are not as scarce as you would think or hope. Ask your High School student to say the pledge of alliegence or who was in the Axis in WWll or who won the Spanish American war.. The military is not taught or tolerated in most public schools. No recruiters on campus, no ROTC, no assemblys for Veterans Day etc.. Salcido was comfortable talking like that because his peers and the administrators agree with him. I was one of very few ex military teaching.

I have served honorably in the U.S. Navy for 22 years including Viet Nam Service in 1972 on a Nuclear Powered Cruiser Homeported In Long Beach California. I Think Mr. Salcido owes the 58,000 Military Members Killed in Action an apology.

I worked for a large school district for 23 years. My wife for 33. We encountered many teachers like this. We had a saying, "Those that can, do; those that can't teach; those that can't teach become administrators". Knowing what I do now, I would never put my child in a public school. 'Nuff said.

I served 5 yrs 9 mos and 13 days in the Infantry, mostly Airborne with one tour in Vietnam with the 101st Abn. I am also a retired Licensed Specialist in School Pysch were I did educational and behavioral evaluations. Somewhere around the early 20th century Dewey made the comment that education is the means whereby we can transform the world into the one we want (paraphrase) and it has been getting more and more so every year, our educational system is in one "mell of a hess" with far far too many like this idiot indoctrinating (not educating) our children.
