Long Island town charged to honor slain soldier?

First some background from a Hamptons.com article from last June:

Sag Harbor - Army First Lieutenant Joseph J. Theinert returned home today, and a solemn and saddened family and community were on hand to welcome back their native son. Theinert, 24, was a member of the 1st squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, and was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan on June 4, when an improvised explosive device was detonated near his dismounted patrol. This was his first tour of duty.

A resident of Sag Harbor, Theinert was a member of the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, NY. He was also a member of the New York Army National Guard. After being commissioned as an officer in the National Guard, he volunteered to go on active duty before joining his New York Army National Guard Unit.

Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on New York State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Thursday, June 10, and commented "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend the sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow service members of First Lieutenant Joseph Theinert. We are sorry for the loss of this young officer, but we appreciate his devotion and leadership given to his soldiers and our nation."

So this year, for Memorial Day, the town decided to honor their former resident again.  And with a different result....

From ABC News:

The folks on Shelter Island, N.Y., were furious after they held a memorial parade to honor Lt. Joseph Theinert, a town resident who was killed in Afghanistan. The service included having members of Theinert's old unit march along a flag draped street that was named after Theinert.

Then they got the bill. The Long Island Power Authority charged them for hanging the American flags from its utility poles.

The resulting outcry has prompted a change of heart from the embarassed power company and LIPA CEO Michael Hervey is offering to personally pay for the flags. The tab only comes to $23.75 to put flags on 19 LIPA poles, but it wasn't the cost that left some folks sizzling like a summer barbecue.

"It was outrageous," County Legislator Ed Romaine told ABC News. "How do you charge for putting up American flags? LIPA didn't even put up the flags. The American Legion did. To do something patriotic and get charged for it was ridiculous."

Here's a video of the controversy:

Kinda hard to envision something this simple (and asinine) rising to this level. I mean seriously, no one saw this bill go out and thought to themselves "Maybe I should just pay this?"

Kudos to the local Legion Post and indeed all the fine folks in this town.  And praise to the LIPA CEO who offered to pay:

Just got off the phone with the LIPA spokesperson and told me that the CEO offered to pay the fee before this story even hit the media. She doesn't know if it has been accepted. She says the residents of Shelter Island WILL NOT have to pay a fee. They are working with appropriate parties to make sure that this issue will not happen again in the future. And she did say that the state, NY state mandates that LIPA charge the usage fee, and again they are working with elected officials to see that this type of issue doesn't happen again. LIPA is not a private company

LIPA didn't own all the poles. The rate is 5 dollars annually to use all the poles. Fee was pro-rated $1.25 to use the flags for to be displayed for 2 months. It cost $23.75 to use Lipa's 19 poles.

An ounce of common sense would have cured the 1,000 lbs of stupid that has come from this.

A reminder. The above man will never be forgotten. The recognition and honor is a international level.

I'd be happy to pay the bill for a Fallen Soldier, a brother in arms.

Long Island Power Authoruty, as a two tour combat veteran of Iraq, you may send this bill to me for prompt and immediate payment:

SFC Dooley H Buckner
728 Hickory Valley Road
Maynardville, TN 37807
(865) 992-5157

Long Island Power Authority:

If my check is not good enough, then I am sure my brothers at the Maynardville, TN VFW Post 8682 would also be willing to make the payment.

Let me know how you would like the funds distributed to you; check, cash or Us Postal Money Order.

SFC Buckner

Served two combat tours in AFG and Iraq. The people who allowed this to happen probably have never served nor do they even begin to understand the sacrifice of those who have given all. It is shameful yet I see the same thing each and every day. How soon we forget.

I had just posted a short video on my FB in honor of those who have given their all, to REMIND people of the REAL reason we have Memorial Day. As I continued through my email, I came across this outrageous story and had to share this one as well on my FB. I wanted to bring it to the attention of those that have forgotten and that things like this should not happen! I agree with CW4 Amick...how soon we forget!

USAF Veteran

At ease fellow veterans and soldiers! This sounds like a small mistake that was quickly corrected. The over exaggerated feelings of being personally slighted are uncalled for in this case. Save the fight for the real battles.

I believe that Kentucky Dave may be the first person to ever use the terms "common sense" and "honest politician" in the same sentence. This is not an issue of failure on the part of some clerk or even the clerk's boss. This is an issue involving law makers who decided on a law without thinking it through or about the unintended consequences it may have. However, they had no problem taking home a paycheck for their incompetence. This is why people should be paid for performance rather than attendance. RIP Lt. Joseph Theinert. You will not be forgotten by your brothers and sisters.

Have to agree with Ryan , it was a simple mistake which was corrected and it's not the time to be a
bull in a china shop !
RIP Lt Theinert

"NY state mandates that LIPA charge the usage fee"

There's the problem. Of course it's a Liberal State.

Bradford, PA asked for a $25.00 Poppy permit. We do not sell poppies. A donation is received, with the funds going to the wounned and disabled Veterans. The VFW paid for their permit. Our Commander refused to pay them again, for another permit for the same May 27, 2011. Our Post has never paid for a poppy permit, ever.

What did you expect? After all, Obama wanted to make GIs pay for their own medical care for wounds received in combat!!! He was astounded at the response and made it even worse by calling those dissidents bad names! Even "unpatriotic"! I guess He is unfamiliar with the laws all across this nation that relate to "Workman's Compensation for "on the job" injuries! This President is disgusting. HE is "The MOST UNPATRIOTIC PERSON I have ever heard about....and I am an 80 year old Korean Vet! I am surprised he has not already been "recalled"... or worse!

He doesn't seem to have much respect for the military.
Maybe in the future our leaders should be veterans.

Bad press, including major mockery of the play by comedian Jon Stewart, led to President Obama abandoning his proposal to require veterans carry private health insurance to cover the estimated $540 billion annual cost to the federal government of treatment for injuries to military personnel received during their tours on active duty. The President admitted that he was puzzled by the magnitude of the opposition to his proposal.

Description: Idiot101

"Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained. "Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn't compute.." "I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country, "Obama continued "I wasn't asking for blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation's deficit.. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."

Please pass this on to every one including every vet and their families whom you know. How in the world did a person with this mindset become our leader?

REMEMBER THIS STATEMENT...."Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice?"

Description: Idiot102

If he thinks he will ever get another vote from an Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard service member or veteran of a military service he ought to think it over.. If you or a family member is or has served their country please pass this to them.

Please pass this to everyone. I'm guessing that other than the 20-25 percent hardcore liberals in the US will agree that this is just another example why
this is the worst president in American history. Remind everyone over and
over how this man thinks, while he bows to the Saudi Arabian king...
